How Did You Like That Speech?
Pretty Well, as we could have written this speech ourselves. We have been calling for these policies since the 1960's. But who let that woman in a baseball cap into the room?
It seems to me that President Biden hit every point that we have been talking about for years. Not only that, but our points and observations were clearly those the President's advisers have shown him, that women are the largest voting bloc in the USA and that their issues are patriotism, nostalgia, safety for their families, economic security, economic fair play, sense of community in the United States. So, what did the President say? Reference to FDR and patriotism: check. Fight for Democracy as it was during WW II: check. Safety for families, end to gun violence: check. Economic security and fair play, fighting against the marketocracy, corporate profiteering, cost of housing, wages: check. A fair tax policy, increasing taxes on people with $400,000 up and on corporations: check. A future for children: environmental protection, check. The voting power of women after Dobbs, restoration of Roe: check. John Lewis Voting Rights Act: check. Protection of veterans and seniors: check. The two intractable conflicts, Israel/Palestine and the U.S. southern border: Building a temporary pier to get food and water to starving Gazans, starving because Netanyahu is bombing them with U.S. money and U.S. weapons - what are we, supporters of the Third Reich while it stomps Poland? The southern border: he confronted the GOP head on over their reneging on the bipartisan border bill, because they are running dogs for Trump. All in all, excellent work, Mr. President.
Hell, we could have written this speech ourselves. We have been calling for these policies since the 1960's. What's going on in the United States today is that the conflicts of the 1950's have reappeared, with more violence, more money, and more propaganda tools than existed in 1954 Racism, sexism, authoritarianism, isolationism, jingoism, calls for the establishment of one religion, this is the same set of disputes we saw back when white kids were told by their preachers to burn Beatles records, but the rest of us were doing useful, purposeful things like dancing in the streets, demonstrating for civil rights and putting our lives on the line against injustice, war, environmental destruction, sexism.
I have only one serious cultural complaint. Who let that peroxide blonde with the horse face wear a red tee-shirt and a red baseball cap into the chamber? The sergeant at arms is remiss for failing to enforce the dress code, as much remiss as she is for her fashion statement. Young woman, if you so seriously lack a sense of decorum, don't impose yourself on the rest of us. Please.
The question I have after that superb SOTU speech is will it sway anybody that's been opposing Biden's various policies or saying they'd abandon him (by not voting, or doing a write-in for Bernie or someone else). As to Gaza, I think he did the right thing, but I hope that pier won't take any longer than it does to starve to death to get in place and start moving food, water and medical supplies. Palestinians are being deliberately starved and denied water by Netanyahu's government and military. Aside from that, the Biden campaign now needs to address the complaints that working Trump supports have about Democratic policies and pollsters, that they don't hear themselves being mentioned in the rhetoric. So there are 800,000 new jobs: I don't have on. So the economy's booming; not for me. They must reach this group. Trump won't help them, and that has to be spelled out step by step going forward.
